LLMs Explained for Ecommerce Sellers (No Jargon)

You don't need to understand how a large language model works internally to use one well, but a few core ideas make every AI tool you touch make more sense.

What an LLM actually does

A large language model (LLM), the technology behind tools like ChatGPT and Claude, predicts the most likely next piece of text given everything that came before it, based on patterns learned from a huge amount of text during training. It doesn't look things up in a database when it answers, and it doesn't "know" facts the way a search engine returns them, it generates a plausible continuation based on patterns.

This single idea explains most of what LLMs are good at and most of where they fail.

Why this makes them excellent at some ecommerce tasks

Tasks that are fundamentally about producing well-patterned text (a product description in a certain style, a reply that follows your brand's tone, a summary of a long document) play directly to what an LLM is built to do. Give it good input and a clear format request, and the pattern-matching strength does the heavy lifting.

Why this also explains their weaknesses

Because an LLM generates plausible text rather than looking up verified facts, it can state something confidently that is wrong, a behavior often called "hallucination." This matters most for anything involving specific numbers, dates, current prices, or legal and compliance details, exactly the kind of information a seller should always verify independently rather than trust from an AI tool alone.

The practical rule that follows from this

Use AI tools generously for drafting, summarizing, and pattern-following tasks. Always verify anything factual, numerical, or compliance-related, ideally against a primary source (your seller portal, a government website, your CA) rather than asking the same AI tool to "double check itself," since it's working from the same pattern-matching process either way.

One more useful idea: context window

An LLM can only "see" a limited amount of text at once (its context window). This is why pasting your entire product catalog into a chat and asking a broad question often gets a worse answer than pasting the 3 relevant products and asking a specific question, you're giving the model less to search through and a clearer task.
